CIA officer at centre of the leak case fills her life with twins and a desk job

Photo: Valerie Plame, left, is seated with her husband, former diplomat Joseph C. Wilson, in Washington in this Nov. 18, 2003, photograph for the opening spread of Vanity Fair.

WASHINGTON, DC- Joe Wilson says it was mutual love at first sight when he and Valerie Plame spotted each other at a crowded diplomatic reception eight years ago. Well, yes and no. For Plame, the stars in her eyes that night were quickly followed by a LexisNexis computer search the next day to make sure the guy with all the fantastic stories about his life as a globe-trotting diplomat was really legit. It is classic Valerie Plame....Full story

Reid says Rove should resign, Bush and Cheney should apologize for leak

Photo: In this photo provided by ABC News, Sen. Harry Reid appears for an interview on ABC's "This Week," in Washington, Sunday.

WASHINGTON, DC- The Senate Democratic leader said Sunday that presidential adviser Karl Rove should resign because of his role in exposing an undercover CIA officer, and a veteran Republican senator said President George W. Bush needs "new blood" in his White House. Rove has not been charged, but he continues to be investigated in the CIA leaks case that brought the indictment and resignation Friday of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, an adviser to Bush and the top aide to Vice-President Dick Cheney...Full story

Texas pastor electrocuted after grabbing microphone while performing baptism

WACO, Texas- A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after grabbing a microphone while partially submerged, a church employee said. Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was standing in water up to his shoulder in a baptismal at University Baptist Church when he was electrocuted, said Jamie Dudley, a church business administrator and wife of another pastor there. Doctors in the congregation performed chest compressions for 40 minutes before Lake was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Dudley said. Police said they weren't called and the hospital referred calls to the church. The woman Lake was baptizing was not injured, Dudley said. Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, Dudley said. "He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear," Dudley said. "It's the only way you can be loud enough." About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, Dudley said. Lake, who had a wife and three children, had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor, Dudley said.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. accelerated its campaign to polish its image

Click Here!!NEW YORK- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. accelerated its campaign to polish its image by proposing this week a lower-cost health care plan for its employees, promising an environmental initiative, and calling for a boost in the minimum wage. But the world's largest retailer is finding that by trying to please everyone - the public, politicians, shareholders and Wall Street - it may be pleasing no one. The company, which grew to be a $285 billion US giant by relentlessly focusing on offering goods at the lowest-possible cost, has come under a barrage of criticism in recent years for how it treats its workers, diversity in the workplace and its environmental record. Critics complain that the recent initiatives are merely publicity stunts. At the same time, the company seems to have lost some of its competitive edge to retailers like Target Corp., and a lacklustre economy and high gasoline prices have also hurt sales and profits. The 17 per cent drop in Wal-Mart's stock price this year reflects the company's woes. And now a scathing documentary to be released nationally next month, will put the retailer in its crosshairs. Wal-Mart's opponents call its new health care plan inadequate because workers would still have a $1,000 deductible. And they term the company's advocacy of a higher minimum wage as a self-serving attempt to boost the buying power of its low-income customers. "This is a desperate attempt to remake their faltering image," said Chris Kofinis, spokesman at Washington-based Wake Up Wal-Mart, one of Wal-Mart's harshest critics. Opponents argue Wal-Mart's pay and benefits drive down those at other companies trying to compete. Even some conservative allies aren't embracing Wal-Mart's fuzzy approach. "Wal-Mart had a pure position earlier" as a capitalist company, said Tim Kane, economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation. "Now they are muddying the waters by trying to offer a softer image. It leaves them vulnerable to charges that they are insincere." In fact, an internal memo - obtained by Washington-based Wal-Mart Watch and appearing in the New York Times - appeared to undercut Wal-Mart's charm offensive. (Wal-Mart provided a copy to The Associated Press after it learned the New York Times was planning a story.) The memo, written by a company benefits executive to the board, suggested ways to cut soaring medical costs by hiring more part-time workers and discouraging unhealthy job applicants by including physical activity in all jobs.

One longtime Wal-Mart associate, who declined to be named for fear of retaliation, said the memo had left a lot of employees angry. He noted that there is a lot of unhappy talk among employees that Wal-Mart will stop paying for their health insurance. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Mona Williams says the debate underscored that health coverage is "the number one problem facing our nation today." Burt Flickinger, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Marketing, estimates that Wal-Mart spends 70 per cent less per employee on all benefits, including health care and pension plans, than unionized retailers. Union shops, which include supermarkets and wholesale clubs, pay anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 in all benefits per full-time employee. Such a stark difference may not be surprising, given Wal-Mart's focus on cutting costs to maintain its edge as the low-price leader. But it certainly highlights its dilemma going forward. "Wal-Mart is continuing to mature as a company and this requires us to think about our business in a new way," Williams continued. "Many of the issues we have dealt with from a defensive posture are now seen as an opportunity to embrace proactively and become a more innovative and competitive company as a result." In fact, on Nov. 4, Wal-Mart is reaching out to critics by holding a conference in Washington to study its impact on the economy. The company hired Global Insight Inc., a global independent economic forecasting company, to conduct an independent study, giving its economists access to internal data on wages and benefits. But the strategy could backfire: The gathering will also feature presentations from a group of economists, some of which are not flattering. Wal-Mart says it has listened to critics, employees and shoppers over the past year. But how much it is willing to sacrifice to please its opponents remains to be seen. In the memo, Wal-Mart acknowledged that health care is one of the most pressing reputation issues it faces. But how will it keep escalating costs down while still being perceived as a good citizen?

Wal-Mart's benefits costs jumped to $4.2 billion this year, from $2.8 billion in 2002, and the company noted that its workers are getting sicker than the national average, particularly with obesity-related diseases. At the same time, the company acknowledged the current insurance plan is unaffordable to many people. In fact, less than half of Wal-Mart employees are on company insurance, compared with more than 80 per cent at Costco Wholesale Corp. -Anne Dinanzio & M. Kabell

Barrier on Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco could reduce suicides

SAN FRANCISCO, California- About 250 people marched Sunday in San Francisco to raise money for a suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge. "There's a lot of people walking here that want that barrier up," said Rachael Friedman, an organizer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness walk that supports the erection of the barrier and other programs to prevent suicide. A suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge would deter suicides, leading many despondent people to seek help instead of plunging to their deaths, experts say. There have been 1,218 Golden Gate Bridge suicides reported between the time the bridge opened, on May 27, 1937, and this past Friday, according to a review of records reported by the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. Mental health experts believe the number could be higher because some suicides go unreported. And at least 87 per cent of people who have jumped to their deaths from the bridge are from the San Francisco Bay Area, dispelling the notion that people travel from around the world to die here, the newspaper reported. Golden Gate Bridge district directors voted in March to authorize a $2 million US feasibility study for a bridge suicide barrier, which has not yet been fully funded. Officials at the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building and other suicide landmarks recognized a crisis years ago and erected suicide barriers.

"When suicide becomes difficult, people do not switch to another method. They tend to get help," said Eve Meyer, executive director of San Francisco Suicide Prevention and an advocate for a suicide barrier. "This is what happened in England when the formula for gas ovens was changed . . . and it became harder for people to purchase certain over-the-counter drugs. The suicide rate went down. England has a suicide rate half the size of ours because they're so aggressive about it." Accessibility is partly what makes the Golden Gate Bridge such an attractive suicide spot, Meyer said. The railing is only 1.20 metres high, and the parking lot is a short distance from the bridge. "It's something you can accomplish relatively easily," she said, "and that's what makes it so dangerous." Suicide is "a function of what's available," added Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatry professor at Johns Hopkins University. "Some people already have the Golden Gate Bridge in their mind, in the same way others have a gun in the closet." A recent study by the Psychiatric Foundation of Northern California that compiled the local coroner's reports from January 1995 to July 2005 found that most of the Golden Gate Bridge suicides - 75 per cent - were men. The age of the jumpers range from 14 to 85, with an approximate median age of 41. An estimated 26 jumpers have survived, according to San Francisco Suicide Prevention and the coroner. Despite the high numbers, the newspaper reported that research dating back almost three decades shows that many people prevented from killing themselves at the bridge did not go on to commit suicide. In 1978, Richard Seiden, a professor of behavioural science at the University of California, Berkeley, published a study of 515 people prevented from jumping off the bridge. He found that only six per cent went on to kill themselves.

Texas leads the United States in hunger

AUSTIN, Texas- A higher percentage of Texas households were at risk of going hungry over the last three years than in any other state, said data released Friday by the U.S. Agriculture Department. Between 2002 and 2004, more than 16 per cent of Texas households at some point had trouble providing enough food for all their family members, the USDA report said. In nearly five per cent of Texas households, at least one family member actually went hungry at least one time during that period because the household couldn't afford enough food. That's the fourth-highest rate in the country. Across the United States, 11.4 per cent of households were at risk of going hungry during that period and 3.6 per cent of U.S. households had at least one member go hungry, the USDA said. The latest national figures were higher than in the previous three-year period. Between 1999 and 2001, an average of 10.4 per cent of households were at risk for hunger and an average of 3.1 per cent of households experienced hunger.

Singing with the dummySusan Barth on her way to stardom

Photo: Flashy dashy, bohemian chic singer, Susan Barth.

If you are not yet familiar with her name, Susan Barth is an assured success. The extremely sensual and quasi intellectual rebel- bohemian voice of  Susan Barth will haunt you. And talking about personality! Barth wrote the book on the "je ne sais quoi"! You would like to be in her company. She is down to earth, practical, sophisticated and a bohemian chic. Her publicist sent us her CD "WONDERLAND". God! another CD! We did not finish yet shoveling  the bags of CDs and CDs and CDs we got this week. But, curiosity killed the cat.

Artwork of Susan...turn images on

So Tired of YouPhoto: "So Tired of You" one of Barth's CDs. But the knock out is "Wonderland". Her most recent released album.

This time, it was us, not the cat. But Barth's "Wonderland" did not kill us. We loved it. Barth's voice is a teaser. You feel in her voice the intimate whispers of a real woman.  Her genre reminded us of the sixties but, her vocal projection is up to date. Meaning, Barth has a "modern voice", a tempo in her phrasing and a delightful vocal virtuosity. Hippy on the edge when she screams and romantic when she flirts with her tunes. Growing in New Jersey, Barth acquired her first guitar from her brother who earned it by selling Christmas cards. It was on this instrument with strings rising perilously above the fretboard, that she wrote her first songs. The music of Rickie Lee Jones and Carole King sparked an emotional resonance and the Beatles supplied a lifetime of ideas about crafting concise, harmony riddle pop songs. Skipping the school to take the train into Manhattan revealed an alternate universe. "It was a far cry from the white bread suburbs where I grew up." Barth said. But California was even further. Once in Los Angeles,  she committed herself to songwriting and began creating an ever growing catalogue of songs and developing a network of musicians from the bands of Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Rait and Macy Gray, many of whom and occasionally perform with her in Los Angeles club scene. Barth got recognition. He is the recipient of several awards, including "Billboard Song Contest" 2nd Place Alternative Category; ASCAP: 4 Songwriting Merit Awards; Unisong Finalist; Music Dish: Best of Batch and Artist of the Week"; Garageband.Com: Track of the Day.

Barth is a sweet, tender, explosive and multi talented free spirited singer. A lovely character too.

Susan Barth' "Wonderland" is a delightful collection of songs delivered with friendly vibes, warmth, originality and that sensual teasing voice. You will enjoy it, if you are in the mood for and ready to re-sail in your nostalgic escapades. The musical arrangements are well crafted, the acoustic guitars added an ultra sensually vibrant ambiance and the voice of Barth enrobed the whole thing with charm and feminine  negligee elegance. Barth is a solid, free-spirited and captivating singer. Although, sometimes her voice trembles in a  few bars and squeezed  notes,  it remains sparkling in emotions and inner sensitivity. With patience and continuous audacity, Susan Barth will make it big time. But who knows, when and how? Only time could and would tell. And that's all for Susan Barth, now.

Spanish crown princess gives birth to baby girl, second in line to the throne

Photo: Spain's crown Prince Felipe, left, and Spain's Princess Letizia, are seen in this Oct. 12, 2005 file photo taken in Madrid.

MADRID, Spain- Spain's Crown Princess Letizia gave birth to a girl early Monday, who becomes second in line to the throne after her father Crown Prince Felipe, the royal palace said. It was the first child born to the royal couple. It was not immediately known how mother and child were doing or any other details of the birth. "Princess of Asturias has just given birth to a girl," said the Royal Palace in a mobile text message to journalists. The baby was born about seven hours after Letizia, accompanied by her husband, entered the Ruber International Clinic in the north of Madrid on Sunday on advice from her gynecologist after having contractions. Spanish news reports said Letizia had given birth two weeks before her due date. The new princess, whose name has yet to be announced, is second in line for the throne after Prince Felipe. Her place in the royal succession could drop if Felipe and Letizia have any sons.

The Spanish constitution now allows a female heir to the throne only if she has no brothers. However, the girl could become the first Spanish princess to have the same right as a boy to accede to the throne and become queen. The Socialist government is looking into changing the law under which the eldest male is automatically heir to the throne even if he has an older sister. Letizia Ortiz became Spain's crown princess in May 2004 when she married Prince Felipe in a glamorous royal wedding ceremony. Letizia and Felipe surprised Spaniards on Nov. 1, 2003, by announcing their engagement. Few knew that the heir to the Spanish throne had been dating a woman who was one of the country's best-known television personalities, a divorcee without royal or aristocratic links.

The tall, dashing prince met Letizia at a dinner party in late 2002 and they started dating secretly the following spring. The Spanish royal family enjoys wide respect, with King Juan Carlos revered for his role in ushering in democracy after the death of dictator Gen. Francisco Franco in 1975 and putting down an attempted coup in 1981.

French actor Gerard Depardieu says he's ending his film career

Photo: Gérard Depardieu, Bordeaux, June 19, 2005.

PARIS, France- Famed French actor Gerard Depardieu said in a newspaper interview that he's ending his film career - and swears he wasn't drunk when he said it. "I'm in the process of stopping filming," the portly, Oscar-nominated actor was quoted as saying in weekly Le Parisien Dimanche. "I'm a guy who's leaving! A guy who's not drunk. For once." Depardieu, one of France's most prolific actors, was speaking on the set of an upcoming French film and is scheduled to appear in a new installment of the Asterix series next year, the newspaper said. 'Judging Amy' actress shot to death

LOS ANGELES, California- Teen actress Tara Correa-McMullen, who portrays a former gang member in the TV show "Judging Amy," was shot to death amid gang violence, police said. Police in Inglewood, a suburb south of Los Angeles, said the actress was shot several times as she stood outside an apartment complex Oct. 21. Two men with her were wounded. Correa-McMullen's parents, Devora Correa and Thomas McMullen, wrote in the eulogy that was read at the 16-year-old's funeral on Friday that their daughter made friends with everyone, "whether they were a grip or a caterer." No suspects have been identified but the shooting is believed to be gang-related, police said. "She may have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Sgt. Steve Overly. After filming her first movie, "Rebound," which was released this summer, Correa-McMullen won a recurring role on "Judging Amy" as a former gang member named Graciela.

Nude Janet video circulates on the 'net

Photo: Janet Jackson.

NEW YORK-Janet Jackson has been exposed -- and this time, Justin Timberlake is nowhere to be seen. A video clip showing Jackson sunbathing naked has been circulating on the Internet and was still playing on some websites Thursday. The 40-second paparazzi video was shot from bushes near the singer's home. Jackson's publicist didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Thursday for comment. Her lawyers were reportedly attempting to have the video taken off the web. On one site, a freeze-frame was still up Thursday, but the video link had been taken down -- replaced with the message "removed because lawsuits aren't really my thing." The exact source of the video and when it was shot was unclear. Photos taken at the same time popped up online last year. Jackson found herself in the middle of controversy last year when Timberlake revealed her right breast -- the now infamous "wardrobe malfunction" -- at the end of their set during the halftime show of the Super Bowl. Last week, her former brother-in-law, Young DeBarge, accused her of having a "secret" child -- a daughter, Renee, now 18 -- with ex-husband James DeBarge. The 39-year-old singer issued a statement Wednesday saying: "I do not have a child and all allegations saying so are false." Jackson's brother Tito defended her in an interview that was to air Thursday night on syndicated TV entertainment show Extra. "I do not have a nephew or niece or whatever it is that's being said right now," he said. "I'm pretty sure it bothered her a little bit, but she's going to go on and be strong like Janet always is.... She'll be OK."

LOS ANGELES, California- These are definitely not good vibrations. An auction of Beach Boys memorabilia was cancelled Thursday after representatives of the band told the auction house the items had been stolen from a North Hollywood warehouse. The band's record company learned of the auction planned by London-based CooperOwen when the items appeared on the Internet, said Edwin McPherson of Brother Records, the band's corporate entity. He said it was cancelled "with about 30 minutes to spare." The 28 lots of items included original sheet music written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. Police confirmed a report had been filed about the alleged theft but declined further comment.

Paris Hilton, Nicole RichieParis Hilton & Nicole Richie Start Up Simple Life

Photo: Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

Former best friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie begin filming the fourth season of The Simple Life on Tuesday. They don't have a network for their show and they're not speaking to each other, but that's not stopping Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie from filming another season of The Simple Life. The win-win part for the former best friends: Even if no network picks up their show (which is being produced by 20th Century Fox Television), Paris and Nicole are guaranteed money because their options were renewed earlier this year. The hotel heiress is optimistic that viewers will get to see the fourth season: "All of them are fighting over it," she says of the networks "vying" for their show.

A group of a thousand women have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Many of them are women from across the globe who've been working in their communities - sometimes at great personal risk. Just twelve women have won the coveted prize - the first a century ago in 1905. The last two winners were women ... so what are the chances of a hat trick?

Goldie Hawn

Image: Goldie HawnPhoto: Goldie Hawn.

Goldie Hawn won an Oscar at the young age of 23 and has made a career of the role of ditzy blonde.  Now nearing 60, she has published her memoirs exploring the experiences, good and bad, that have shaped her.   She is now writing a book, a sort of memoirs  about the anger, abuse and desperation of her early years and how they led her to joy and spiritual faith. Another expected book to make a big buzz is the new memoirs of Lauren Bacall.  This magnificent actress and stage diva defined a new kind of sex appeal with her angular looks, vulnerability and wisecracks. At twenty they married and she became half of one of the world's most celebrated couples. At twenty-four she was a mother, at twenty-five an actress on the wane and at thirty-two she was a widow.  Sixty years later she's still making films, and headlines.

Lauren BacallPhoto: Lauren Bacall.

In her new book, Bacall  tells us a lot about stardom then and now, and her life with and without Bogie. Lauren Bacall was catapulted into stardom in 1944 starring opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not.

On Tall Women

Are they really more ambitious and less broody? Recent research carried out at the University of St Andrews and the University of Stirling has found that tall women may be more ambitious in their careers and less inclined to start a family than their shorter counterparts.

Ms. Dynamite

Ms. Dynamite Photo: Ms. Dynamite.

Niomi Daley, 1981, London, England. Winning the Mercury Music Prize in 2002 confirmed that Niomi Daley aka Ms. Dynamite had completed her remarkable passage into the hearts of the British public and press. Quite an achievement for a level headed woman of 21 who had only been performing in front of crowds for three years. Daley was raised in north London with nine brothers and sisters on a musical diet of roots, reggae and soul, and once described her own vocals as "like a cat being thrown off a building". She began chatting in a live environment at raves, initially as a joke with friends from a London pirate radio station. Having passed on the opportunity to study anthropology, Ms. Dynamite's debut release, "Booo!", was recorded with garage luminary Sticky. The track originated on Jason Kaye's Social Circles label but swiftly graduated to London Records. Having enjoyed several months success on the club scene, the single finally broke into the UK Top 20 in May 2001.Ms. Dynamite quickly gained a reputation as a feisty yet approachable person, and grew up alongside her friends in So Solid Crew, themselves enjoying a meteoric rise. She became the darling of the UK broadsheet newspapers and made a name for herself at Channel 4 television, fronting their Flava show. The album A Little Deeper was released in March 2002 to great acclaim, which also majored on a comparison between Ms. Dynamite and US singer Lauryn Hill. There are a number of similarities between the two, the aching vocals of "Watch Over Them" and the tenderness of "Brother" for instance. A memorable track on the album was "It Takes More", its silky smooth R&B chorus tinged with melodica and complementing sharply observed verses, where Ms. Dynamite raps "tell me how many Africans died for the baguettes on your Rolex". Other hit singles from A Little Deeper included "Now U Want My Love" and the distinctive "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee", the latter featuring a glockenspiel and a shriller vocal tone. Ms. Dynamite also participated on Ed's Guest List, the debut album from garage producer Ed Case. Her Mercury Prize was followed by three successes at the British MOBO awards of 2002, confirmation that she was one of the hottest new UK talents of the year.
